The University of Ghana has been honoured with a citation and a plaque in the SDGs Energy Curriculum category at the recently concluded Think Energy SDG Awards.
The award comes as a recognition of the University’s outstanding efforts in developing an exemplary energy curriculum that seamlessly incorporates the principles of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and empowers students with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change within the energy sector.
The Dean of the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana, and the Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, presented the prestigious awards to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, in her office.
In her response upon receiving the awards, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo expressed her appreciation, stating, “This recognition acknowledges our endeavors and motivates us to strive for even greater achievements.”
Prof. Amfo highlighted that “while the University of Ghana excels in impactful research endeavors for the betterment of society, there is room to enhance visibility by showcasing these accomplishments.” She emphasised the importance of intensifying efforts in raising visibility and publicity, thereby effectively spotlighting its commendable undertakings to the global audience.
Prof. Kaufmann echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s sentiments, underscoring the significant contributions of the School of Engineering Sciences. She extended an invitation to the Vice-Chancellor to personally visit the School and witness the remarkable initiatives being undertaken. Prof. Kaufmann also took the opportunity to apprise the Vice-Chancellor of the pioneering "Conversion of Plastic Wastes to Fuel Project," a standout research effort of the School.
The Dean also emphasised the School's active engagement on social media platforms, where an editorial team diligently works to augment visibility, foster partnerships with interested stakeholders, and align with the overarching vision of advancing Green Energy initiatives in Ghana.
Prof. Kaufmann also used the occasion to brief the Vice-Chancellor about the impressive array of research accomplishments and products generated by both students and staff of the School of Engineering Sciences during the Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) held at La Bawaleshie.
The SDGs awards is a global prestigious award designed to celebrate and honour corporate and academic institutions working together to achieve global leadership on SDGs, 4,7,13,14, and 17.
The University of Ghana was among more than 50 institutions and individuals, recognised and awarded for their involvement in promoting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially on sustainable energy resources.
Some categories for the awards were SDGs Teaching/Learning Award, Energy Media Personality of the Year, SDGs Communication Award, SDGs Research Award, SDGs Energy Curriculum Award, SDGs Automobile Company of the year, among others.
