The University of Pennsylvania has recognised Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences, UG, as one of ten distinguished alumni featured on the Penn Engineering Wall of Fame.
During the recent Penn Engineers 2024 celebration, she was also awarded a commemorative plaque. This honour makes Prof. Kaufmann the first African woman to be featured on the Penn Engineering Wall of Fame, a recognition celebrating the outstanding achievements and contributions of alumni, faculty and other notable figures affiliated with the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Wall of Fame highlights individuals who have made significant impacts in their fields, showcasing their innovation, leadership and dedication.
Prof. Kaufmann earned her BSE in Engineering in 1992, MSE in Engineering in 1993, and her PhD in 1998, all from the University of Pennsylvania.
In an interview with the Public Affairs Directorate-UG News Desk, Prof. Kaufmann expressed her gratitude to her alma mater for acknowledging her contributions to Engineering and honouring her with a plaque.
"This one is special because it is from my alma mater," she said excitedly. She also shared her pride in being the only African female featured on the Penn Engineering Wall of Fame 2024, stating, "The University of Pennsylvania is a big place with many distinguished alumni worldwide, so when I received the message, I was honestly blown away."
Reflecting on the recognition, she added, "How I feel about the plaque is indescribable because the University of Pennsylvania gave me the education that shaped me into what I am today. When I reflect on it, I’m still surprised, and I hope this encourages young ladies who choose to enroll in engineering school."
Prof. Kaufmann highlighted the pivotal role the University of Pennsylvania played in her Engineering journey and career development. She emphasised, "My choice of Engineering and my decision to study engineering at the highest level took place at the University of Pennsylvania."
She also revealed that the School of Engineering Sciences, UG, has established a mutually beneficial relationship with the University of Pennsylvania. This partnership includes collaborations with the Department of Engineering, the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences and the Medical Physics Department in a global training and development programme, with hopes for more future collaborations.
In her closing remarks, Prof. Kaufmann urged students to be purposeful in all their activities and to make the most of small opportunities.
