Overview of the College

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) has been at the forefront of applied research, teaching and learning, and human-centered innovations. We run a diverse array of programs in the applied and basic sciences and engineering at the graduate and undergraduate levels, supported by modern laboratory infrastructure. Some of our products are revered industry captains, blazing the trail of innovations, transforming the landscape of leadership in the minerals and extractive sector, agriculture, engineering, drug discovery, renewal energy, waste management, information technology and artificial intelligence, and many more.

Whether you are seeking opportunities in partnership for cutting-edge research in any of our areas of research focus or seeking a quality career path in the basic and applied sciences, CBAS offers a wide range of unique options. Our faculty and staff are global leaders in their respective disciplines. The college hosts two of the World Bank centers of excellence: the West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) and the West Africa Center for Crop Improvement (WACCI). These two centers of excellence have pioneered some of the most transformative research projects in the West African sub-region over the years.

Through many local and international partnerships, the college offers opportunities for impactful and empowering student experience. Our programs are designed to develop patrons holistically, with significant industry-based practical input. Consistent with the recently launched internship policy of the University of Ghana, CBAS is committed to developing many more partnerships to create opportunities for industrial experience for students at all levels. Career fairs and entrepreneurship hubs offered by academic units within the college provide students with additional practical training and skills required to set up enterprises upon completion of their programs.

The college comprises six schools, one institute, and six research centers (three of which are agricultural research centers), with a total student population exceeding twelve thousand. We have a vibrant analytical laboratory network delivering quality support to faculty and students undertaking cutting-edge research. As a premier college in the basic and applied sciences, we are proud of our legacy of mentoring new public and private tertiary institutions and providing the requisite human resources for them to thrive.

Over the past 75 years, the constituents of CBAS have contributed to the formulation of national policy and have been instrumental in setting the national developmental agenda. Our staff continue to shape the discourse on contemporary issues of climate change, drug discovery, artificial intelligence, natural resources development, among others. As the global environment is faced with serious challenges arising from natural and human-induced environmental change, CBAS will continue to offer innovative solutions through cutting-edge multidisciplinary research.

We are committed to advancing the five-year University of Ghana strategic plan, which is based on five strategic priorities:

  • Transformative Student Experience
  • Impactful Research
  • Commitment to our Faculty and Staff
  • Engagement and Partnership
  • Sustainable Resource Mobilization and Stewardship.
